Azerbaijani journalists visiting Israel have travelled to the northern city of Akko, which is included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, APA’s correspondent on assignment in Israel reports.
As part of the visit, the journalists met with representatives of the Israel-Azerbaijan community at the Coordination Center for the Heritage of Mountain Jews operating in Akko.
Akko Mayor Ohad Segev, who attended the meeting, expressed satisfaction with the development of relations between Azerbaijan and Israel.
During the meeting, the mayor presented a certificate commemorating Azerbaijan’s National Hero Albert Agarunov to his brother Rantik Agarunov, who lives in Akko.
The certificate emphasizes that the memory of Albert Agarunov lives on as a symbol of courage, brotherhood between peoples, tolerance and mutual respect.
Speaking at the event, Shirin Mikhayeli, head of the Mountain Jewish community of Azerbaijani origin in Akko, said events are planned in Akko and Baku to commemorate Albert Agarunov.
Mikhayeli said ties with Azerbaijan are of particular importance to the community. According to him, speaking Azerbaijani and preserving Azerbaijani culture and traditions are an important part of their identity.
“We are Jews, our name is Jewish. But we were born among the Azerbaijani people. The civilization and culture of the Azerbaijani people came to Israel together with us,” he said.
The community leader also touched upon Azerbaijan-Israel relations, emphasizing that the strategic friendship and brotherly ties between the two countries are of particular importance to them. He also spoke about the role of the Azerbaijani community in Israel’s political life, saying that they closely follow the country’s political and diplomatic processes and maintain contacts with various political circles.
“We know Israeli politics and Israeli diplomacy. We know how to talk to them. We represent Azerbaijan in Israel with dignity,” Shirin Mikhayeli added.
During the meeting, the Azerbaijani journalists received information about the history of Mountain Jews living in Israel, their ties with Azerbaijan and the community’s participation in the country’s socio-political life.
