Azerbaijan and central Baku are at risk of water scarcity, mentioned in the Master Development Plan of Baku until 2040, APA reports.
Even though the water supply network is wide, due to the old system and the difficult terrain of Baku, water leaks are observed. According to estimates, the amount of water lost from the network is 48% of the total volume of water supplied.
Existing water resources are large enough to supply a city of 3.5 million people, but in some areas of the city water supply is intermittent (6 hours a day, 14 days a month).
About 6% or 744 million cubic meters of water produced in Azerbaijan is consumed on the Absheron Peninsula.
