Inter-working Roaming Expert Group meet in Baku

Baku. Ilhama Isabalayeva - APA-Economics. The GSM Association holds the 55th meeting of Inter-working Roaming Expert Group (IREG) in Baku on the initiative of Azercell Telecom, the leading mobile operator of Azerbaijan.
Ali Aghan, Vice-President of Azercell, told the opening ceremony that Azerbaijan leads other Eurasian countries in GDP growth and the business enabling environment.
In his view, holding such meetings in Baku will assist in consolidating the leading position of Azerbaijan in the region.
Mikayil Jabbarov, Deputy Minister of Economic Development, spoke about on the economic successes, saying Azerbaijan’s GDP has doubled over the past 4 years and poverty dropped to 13%.
Iltimas Mammadov, Deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technology, noted that the growth of the ICT sector was 35-40% over the past 4 years.
According to him, revenue from mobile phone services account for more than 70% of total income generated in the communications.
He recalled that the 127th anniversary of the laying the first telephone line in the country will be marked on December 6.
Robindhra Mangtani, Director of Interworking and Roaming at GSMA, said experts from more than 40 countries have joined the 55th meeting in Baku.
A number of issues, including attempts threatening security and protection against frauds in the SS7 networks, capabilities of Electronic exchange of Roaming Database, management of options of roaming and 3GPP network, NGMN-CSMA cooperation agreement, renewal of IP Interworking Mobile Alliance and SS7 network planning will be discussed at the meeting.
SS7 (Signaling System #7) is a set of telephony signaling protocols which are used to set up most of the world’s public switched telephone network telephone calls.
IREG specifies technical, operational and performance issues supporting inter-working and roaming in close liaison with the operator community. IREG is responsible for the GPRS Roaming Exchange (GRX) and its evolution, the IP packet Exchange (IPX) architecture and delivery of Open Connectivity initiatives such as electronic exchange of roaming data, SMS and roaming hubbing.
IREG studies the compatibility and interoperability perspectives of the signalling (SS7/MAP) and interworking of roaming issues between voice and packet data networks including PLMNs (Public Land Mobile Networks), PSTNs (Public Switched Telephone Networks), IN/Camel
(Intelligent Networks), ISDNs (Integrated Services Digital Networks), NGNs (Next Generation Networks) and IP/Packet Data Networks, to define the end-to-end functional tests of bearer services, teleservices, supplementary services and IP services such asMMS, GPRS, IMS, IM, WLAN, ENUM, Sigtran,C7 emulation, etc
The last IREG meeting was held in Prague. Baku is the first in this region to host this meeting.
