Iranian ambassador: Iran will accelerate work on the North-South Project

Baku. Rashad Suleymanov - APA-Economics. Iran plans to accelerate work on the North-South Project, said the Iranian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Nasir Hamidi Zare.
He added that a consortium of railway administrations of Iran, Azerbaijan and Russia will be set up to coordinate and speed up works.
«Iran plans to do construction work in Gazvin-Rasht and Rasht-Enzeli route. If planned 8.5 km railway is built in Azeri soil, work will start not in Enzeli but in Iranian Astara-Rasht direction,” he added.
Heads of railways of Russia, Iran and Azerbaijan signed a trilateral memorandum on mutual understanding on March 29 on the conditions for building the Gazvin-Rasht-Astara rail line, which is part of the International North-South Transport Corridor.
Russia, Iran and India launched negotiations on establishment of the North-South Corridor in September, 2000 and final agreement was reached on May 11, 2002. Azerbaijan joined the project in 2005.
