Russia favors Azerbaijan-suggested East-West backbone project

Baku. Rashad Suleymanov - APA-Economics. Azerbaijan’s Minister of Communications and Information Technologies Ali Abbasov led a delegation to attend the 39th meeting of the Regional Commonwealth in the field of Communications and TurkmenTel Exhibition in Ashgabat.
Azerbaijan was represented in the showcase by Sinam, Ultra, AZEL, Kur and other IT firms.
Azeri minister briefed the participants about reforms in ICT sector of the country.
He assed that a ministerial meeting will bring together interested parties in Baku on November 11-14 to discuss the proposed East-West high-speed data transmission backbone is seen as a key initiative to do away with the digital abyss between the West and the East.
The ministerial meeting will be held on the sidelines of BakuTel-2008 International Exhibition in Azerbaijan.
Russia expressed its support for the project and Turkmenistan said it stands ready to back the implementation of the project after the feasibility study of the Caspian fiber-optic cable line.
On the sidelines of the meeting in Ashgabat, Ali Abbasov also met with his counterparts from Russia and Turkmenistan, and senior officials from the Universal Postal Union, Bulgaria, Slovenia and other countries.
