Baku-APAA magnitude-5.1 earthquake struck parts of southern Philippines early Wednesday, state seismologists reported, APA reports.

But no damage was expected following the tectonic quake that shook parts of Davao del Sur province at around 4:53 a.m. local time, said Desiderio Cabanlit, chief of Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) Davao.

Cabanlit said the quake was centered some 50 kilometers southeast of Sarangani town in Davao del Sur at a depth of 52 kilometers.

The latest quake happened in two weeks after a powerful magnitude-7.2 temblor rocked the central Philippine province of Bohol and the Visayas and Mindanao regions, killing almost 200 people, destroying roads, cutting power and rendering nearly 1 million homeless while aftershocks as powerful as magnitude-5.2 rocked the quake-hit island-province.

The Philippines sits in a region called the Pacific Ring of Fire where continental plates collide, causing frequent quakes and volcanic activities.

On Aug. 1976, a magnitude-7.8 quake rocked off the southern Philippines'Moro Gulf, generating a tsunami that killed over 5, 000 people, according to government estimates.
