Baku. Hafiz Heydarov - APA. The Azerbaijani, who was yesterday reported killed in Syria, has been identified. Zumrud Mammadova, mother of Hasan Mammadov aka Hasan Azeri, told APA that her son was born in Baku in 1977. Mammadova said he knew about her son’s death from APA.
“I recognized him as soon as saw the photo. This is my son Hasan. I do not believe he died. I wish the report were false,” she said.
Zumrud Mammadova says Hasan Mammadov left two years ago.
“We did not know where he had gone. We informed Khatai district police about it. They carried out investigation and revealed that Hasan went to Iran through Astara. But later, my son called and said he was in Afghanistan. We tried to make him return home, but couldn’t do it. Every time he said he had gone to become a martyr. He called us infidels, as we opposed to him,” she said.
Mammadova says she last talked to him last June.
“Hasan is married, has three children. He wanted to take them, but they refused. Last June he called. We demanded him to return, he did not listen to us,” he said.
Mammadova says her son joined radical religious groups several years ago.
“We are Shiites. Several years ago I heard Hasan joined bearded believers. I tried, but could not get him back on track,” she said.
Zumrud Mammadova asked to clarify her son’s fate.
“I ask law-enforcement bodies and media to clarify my son’s fate. I am worried about him,” she said.
As the situation became tense a large number of Azerbaijani citizens started to go Syria and fight against the government forces within various radical groups. Nearly 100 Azerbaijanis were killed in the battles during this period. Photos of most of them were posted on social networks by the Mujahideen.
