About 600 foreigners serve sentences in Azerbaijani penitentiaries

The conference focused on regulation of attitude toward the foreign prisoners and their problems. â€œThe draft recommendations were elaborated concerning the problems caused by religious, language, cultural and traditional differences, as well as narrow relations of these persons with their relatives. The draft recommendations include detention conditions, determination of penitentiary, legal aid affairs, contacts with diplomatic missions, education, job, freedom of faith and conscience, medical service, release or exchange of prisoners, as well as training of personnel working with the foreign prisonersâ€.

Huseyn Alikhanov said relevant measures were taken for realization of these recommendations and foreign, non-citizen or refugee prisoners were provided with opportunities to contact with the representations and diplomatic missions of their countries, international organizations.

About 600 foreigners are serving sentences in the penitentiaries of the Azerbaijani Justice Ministry. There are Georgian, Russian, Iranian, Turkish, Nigerian, Kazakh and Chinese citizens among them. Most of them were sentenced for drug smuggling, trespassing, burglary and swindle.
