Close relatives of Azerbaijani former economic development minister sentenced

Baku Court of Grave Crimes told APA that Farhad Aliyevâ€™s cousin Rafeddin Asgarov was sentenced to 11 years imprisonment, the ministerâ€™s other relative Ramiz Aliyev â€“ to 10 years imprisonment.

Both accused filed an appeal from the decision of Baku Court of Grave Crimes.

Asgarov was detained in Odessa as a result of operations conducted by the Interior Ministryâ€™s Criminal Investigation Department. He was reportedly wanted on articles 179 (embezzlement), 206 (smuggling) and 313 (abuse of power) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan. Asgarov has been arrested in connection with the case of former economic development minister of Azerbaijan, imprisoned Farhad Aliyev. Committee Defending the Rights of Farhad Aliyev says Asgarov was mentioned in the accusation brought against the former minister. According to the indictment, Farhad Aliyevâ€™s brother, former president of Azpetrol Group of Companies, imprisoned Rafig Aliyev gave money to forwarder of Prestige LTD Abdulla Javadov, who left for foreign countries, bought jewelry, sent to Baku by plane and then informed Rafeddin Asgarov about it. Rafeddin Asgarov smuggled the jewelry with the help of his acquaintances at the Air Transport Customs Department and handed over to the account department of Prestige LTD.
