Azerbaijan extradites 12 prisoners to Iran

"These individuals have been extradited based on a protocol signed (earlier) between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan," Qayebi added.

He added that the individuals have been charged with different crimes, including drug-trafficking and dealing as well as illegal entry into Azerbaijan. The official further reminded that a number of Iranian nationals are currently spending their prison terms in Azerbaijan, and underlined the necessity for the extradition of these inmates to Iran.

Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar, heading a high-ranking delegation, visited Baku in May 2010 and signed several Memoranda of Understanding. The memorandums included cooperation on border security, the war on drugs, organized crimes and human trafficking, and the extradition of criminals.
Azerbaijani scientist Rashid Aliyev, who was in Iranian prison, was released on August 11. He has been brought to Baku today.
