Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev was also invited to the summit for Azerbaijan’s close involvement in certain activities of the North Atlantic Alliance,” said Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration, Head of the Foreign Relations Department Novruz Mammadov.
Mammadov said that the main plenary session that Azerbaijan attended was related to Afghanistan:
“In fact, this was the largest session of the summit. That meeting was attended by more than 60 heads of state as well as the heads of NATO member states. Azerbaijani President was one of the first ten heads of state made a speech at the meeting. Speech by President Ilham Aliyev consisted of two parts. The first part was about the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The head of state informed the 60 heads of states attending the summit about the way to solve the problem. The second part of the President’s speech was about Azerbaijan-NATO cooperation. Azerbaijan is one of the active partners of NATO and directly contributes to the Alliance in Afghanistan and other issues. All NATO member states appreciated it”, Mammadov said.
Mammadov said that in his speech President Ilham Aliyev expressed his gratitude for the support to Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity at NATO summits and praised it.
“The document adopted by NATO repeatedly expresses support to Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and remains previous position of NATO in force. Given the fact that NATO is the most important political and military organization in the world, this support is very important”, he said.
