"A Global Alliance on missing persons" has been established at the initiative of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Swiss side on May 11, 2021, and Azerbaijan joined this at the invitation of ICRC, Azerbaijan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs told APA.
On April 7, 2022, the first meeting of the Global Alliance has been held. Representatives of the 10 states (Azerbaijan, Argentina, Estonia, Kuwait, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, Peru, Republic of Korea, and Switzerland) that joined the Alliance so far, have attended the meeting.
Opening the event, ICRC's vice-president Gilles Carbonnier noted that the number of missing people in the world over the past 5 years increased by 75% to 173 800, stating Global alliance was established to draw attention to the problem at the global level and to promote the implementation of global commitments in this area.
At the event, our country was represented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and our diplomatic mission in Geneva, and the event attendees were informed about missing people in Azerbaijan, works done at the national level for identification of their destiny, identification of remains of people killed en masse in Bashlibel after the liberation of our lands from occupation, revealing mass graves in Dashalti, Edilli, Sirkhavend and Farrukh villages, Azerbaijan’s efforts to draw attention to this problem at the international level, and resolution on missing persons adopted by the UN General Assembly in this regard.
A hope was expressed about the Global alliance will draw attention to the importance of clarification of the destiny of missing persons at the global level and will seriously contribute to the cooperation in this field.
