A memorandum to be signed between the International Sikh Federation and the Baku Initiative Group will regulate relations established in the academic sphere, Executive Director of the Baku Initiative Group Abbas Abbasov told journalists, APA reports.
Commenting on the Amritsar events, Abbasov said that these events marked a turning point in the history of repression and discrimination against ethnic minorities in India.
“These events reflected the real attitude and approach toward ethnic minorities in India. Following these events, unfortunately, nearly 5 million members of the Sikh community were forced to leave the country and established large diaspora organizations in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada, where they began their legitimate struggle. As you know, this policy of repression and discrimination was later carried out by the Indian government beyond its borders as well. Unfortunately, instead of engaging in negotiations, they began applying repressive policies against the Sikh community. Later, these policies were extended to other ethnic minorities and people belonging to lower castes,” the BIG Executive Director said.
He noted that the Baku Initiative Group began cooperating with representatives of the Sikh community in 2025.
“In 2026, initial contacts were established and discussions were held with Dalits. In the coming months, we will present our joint projects with Dalits to the public. Dalits are also an ethnic minority group and, unfortunately, have been subjected to repression and discrimination for years. Their population is approximately 320 million, yet despite this, the Indian government continues to pursue discriminatory and repressive policies against them,” Abbasov added.
