He said the State Border Service is interested in the development of cooperation with NATO and they continue to work toward the extension of relationship.

NATO Assistant Secretary General for Defense Policy and Planning Huseyin Dirioz emphasized the importance of bilateral cooperation between the countries and international organizations for enhancing border security. He said using this support Azerbaijan has achieved significant progress in the field of border security in recent years.

“It is important that Afghanistan also joins the negotiations in this sphere. Unfortunately, Afghan representatives don’t participate in this event. I would like the countries that participate in the meeting to broaden the cooperation by using this opportunity. NATO always supports the events held within the partnership”.

Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Ministry Araz Azimov informed that they were interested in continuation of cooperation between Azerbaijan and NATO. According to him, Azerbaijan’s border service is able to take wider measures in border security sphere: “Though Azerbaijan achieved its independence 20 years ago, it renders assistance to neighboring countries and shares its experience”.

Azimov noted that though Azerbaijan uses the most modern experience in border protection, it is upon the look of the better model.

The workshop is continued in the sections. The speeches and discussions are held on topics “Place and role of border security in changeable security environment”, “Combating the trans-border crime, including drug trafficking in the Euro-Atlantic area: current situation, challenges and perspectives” and “Border Management Program in the Central Asia” financed by the European Commission.

Representatives of border organizations of Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, as well as NATO, UN, European Union, OSCE, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, National Security Ministry, Interior and Defense ministries, State Migration Service, State Customs Committee, the State Commission for Fighting Against Drug Addiction and Illicit Drugs, as well as diplomatic missions participate in the two-day workshop.

The workshop will focus on the establishment of efficient border control system, holding presentations on works carried out on prevention of drug distribution, combating the trans-border crime and the other issues. Within the event the workshop participants will become familiar with service, organization of training-education and social-living conditions at the Academy of the State Border Service.
