Commenting on Azerbaijan’s intention to raise the lease payment, Azimov said that the current lease payment is incommensurate with the value and importance of the radar for Russia’s interests, regional and international security. On the other hand, the payments do not eliminate the threats and risks that Azerbaijan faces while allowing the radar to operate on its territory and that’s why it must be raised for several times: “The experience of other countries, including Russia in attitude to such facilities in other countries, gives grounds to say that it is necessary to raise payments for several timesâ€.
Gabala Radar Station’s lease contract ends in 2012. Russia wants to extend the contract till 2025.
