Azerbaijan’s national flag raised in front of California’s Chapman University

Baku – APA. On the occasion of Azerbaijan’s National Flag Day, the national flag of Azerbaijan was raised in the Global Citizens Plaza in front of Chapman University of California. Azerbaijan’s Consulate General in Los Angeles told APA that conference on the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the independent states after the fall of the USSR was held in Chapman University in the Orange County of California on November 10.

Professor of Chapman University James Coyle made a keynote speech at the conference. The first panel was dedicated to Azerbaijan. Professor James Coyle, Consul General of Hungary to Los Angeles and Latvia’s Honorary Consul attended the panel. The participants of the conference were informed about the achievements got by Azerbaijan within 20 years after the restoration of its independence. It was underlined that the first democratic republic in the Muslim East was founded in 1918, women’s suffrage was granted, Azerbaijan developed rapidly and became the leading country in the region after it gained its independence, Azerbaijan is cooperating with the West in supplying Europe with energy resources, ensuring security, combating terrorism, interreligious and intercultural dialogue is promoted in the country.

Political analysts, experts Vladimir Sokor, Alexandros Petersen, Steve Levin attended the conference. Viewing the 20-year history of independence of the states established after the fall of the USSR, the experts appreciated these countries’ policy of integration into the Euro-Atlantic structures, their role in the economic security and development.

The participants of the conference said unlike the states trying to strengthen their independence, very few countries like Armenia fail to make independent political decisions, such countries’ policy has negative impact on the region’s integration into Euro-Atlantic structures and general development of the region.

Following the conference, the students of Chapman University performed the national anthem of Azerbaijan and the national flag of Azerbaijan was raised. Acting Consul General of Azerbaijan to Los Angeles Ramil Gurbanov raised Azerbaijan’s national flag in the Global Citizens Plaza.

Benjamin Franklin Medal for International Cooperation was awarded to Elin Suleymanov, newly-appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Azerbaijan to the US. Elin Suleymanov was awarded under the decision of the administration of Chapman University for his cooperation with the university and in general the academic staff of California. The presentation ceremony was held in the presence of the conference participants and academic staff of the university. The medal was handed over to Ramil Gurbanov.
