APA reports that Behruz Alkhani was accused of cooperating with the groups opposing to the Iranian government. Behruz Alkhani and the other Azerbaijani political activist Akbar Akbarpur were detained in Urmia by the officers of the Iranian Intelligence Ministry (ETTELAAT). They were held in the one-man cell in the Urmia branch of ETTELAAT. The Azerbaijani political activists reportedly underwent tortures. They faced trial in September, but the information about the sentence has been made public recently.

Urmia Revolutionary Court sentenced Akbar Akbarpur to 13 years in jail, while Behruz Alkhani was sentenced to death. They did not have lawyers.

Due to the threats of ETTELAAT, Behruz Alkhani could not defend himself from the accusations at the last hearing. Therefore, the Azerbaijani political activist was sentenced to death. Behruz Alkhani is awaiting the execution.

Iran has the second highest execution rate in the world, after China.
