Philippe Lefort: I want to contribute to the resolution of the conflict, which impedes the development of the region

Viktoria Dementyeva â€“ APA. â€œI want to contribute to the resolution of the conflict, which impedes the development of the region, and strengthen the relations of your country, as well as of the region countries with the European Union,â€ European Unionâ€™s Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia, Ambassador Philippe Lefort told journalists, APA reports.

Philippe Lefort said due to the enactment of the Lisbon treaty the present mandate of the European Unionâ€™s Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia a little bit differs from the one of his predecessor Peter Semneby. According to Lefort, the EU embassies will consider the issues of internal development and trade, the Special Representative will deal with regional policy and conflicts.
â€œI will try to visit the region frequently. I hope I will be able to visit Baku every month,â€ he said.

Philippe Lefort underlined success in the talks on gas transit and said as a result of the talks Azerbaijan and Turkey signed an agreement.
â€œThis is an important strategic project both for Azerbaijan and for the European Union,â€ he said.
