US Department of State congratulates Azerbaijan on election as member of UN Security Council

APA reports quoting AzerTAc state agency that the official of the Department of State issued a statement and congratulated Azerbaijan on election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
“The United States hopes to work closely with Azerbaijan for supporting the principles shown in the UN Charter, contributing to the efficiency of the Council and increasing its role in maintaining international peace and stability.”

Azerbaijan was supported by 155 UN member states at the voting for non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council held on October 24, 2011.

There are 15 members of the Security Council, consisting of five veto-wielding permanent members (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States) and 10 elected non-permanent members with two-year terms.

According to the UN Charter, the decisions of other organs of the UN are non-binding, while the resolutions of the Security Council are binding.
