Foreign Ministry issues statement on Azerbaijan’s non-permanent membership of UN Security Council

Foreign Ministry’s press service told APA that within the two-year term Azerbaijan will chair the Security Council for a month.

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry is making preparations for the two-year activity at the Security Council, some events are being planned in accordance with the agenda of the Council.

Azerbaijan, as a member of the UN Security Council, is going to put forward new projects on the dialogue among civilizations, aid to the less developed countries and other humanitarian issues.

According to the statement of the Foreign Ministry, Azerbaijan was supported by 155 UN member states at the voting for non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council held on October 24, 2011.

Azerbaijan is the first country in the South Caucasus and Central Asia to be elected as a member of the UN Security Council.

UN Security Council is one of the principal organs of the United Nations and is charged with the maintenance of international peace and security. There are 15 members of the Security Council, consisting of five veto-wielding permanent members and 10 elected non-permanent members with two-year terms.
