Ganira Pashayeva: “The most painful problem of all citizens of Georgia is the violation of its territorial integrityâ€
Pashayeva said that she had been leading Azerbaijan-Georgia inter-parliament friendship group for 6 years and very often visited Georgia: “We remember very well the situation in Georgia in the fields of democracy, human rights, corruption during this country’s membership in the Council of Europe. But the great work was conducted in Georgia in the direction of development of the democracy, protection of human rights, supremacy of law, anti-corruption struggle and everybody see it. Certainly there are the problems which wait for its solution in Georgia. But the main thing is that there is a political will for prevention of the problems and the steps are taken in order to solve them and Georgia is developing in all spheresâ€.
Pashayeva said the development of democratic institutions, protection of human rights and supremacy of law in Georgia were very important and significant for the ethnic minorities in the country. “We hope that, as it was emphasized in the report, the government of Georgia will further accelerate the work done toward the protection of human rights of the ethnic minorities, their integration into the society and public administration. For example, Georgian Azerbaijanis highly appreciated the Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili’s statement to celebrate Azerbaijanis’ Novruz holiday as the national holiday in Georgia and celebration of this holiday in a high level this year. But the most painful problem of this country is violation of its territorial integrity. I consider that we must attach great attention to this issue. Although Azerbaijan and Georgia are the members of the Council of Europe for some years, there are no serious results toward the restoration of their territorial integrities. “Grey zonesâ€, which are out of the international control, are serious threat for the security of Europe. Violation of the territorial integrity of Georgia is a great obstacle on the way of its rapid development in all spheres. We, the Parliament Assembly, must increase our support to Georgia in this issue. The state and people of Georgia expect for increase of efforts by the Council of Europe toward the restoration of its territorial integrityâ€.
