Brussels. Victoria Dementyeva – APA. Within the framework of his visit to the Kingdom of Belgium, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev had a meeting with President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso. APA correspondent in Brussels reports the press conference was held after the meeting.

President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso noted that he had conducted detailed discussions with the President of Azerbaijan and touched upon the energy cooperation and “Nabucco” Project: Azerbaijan is very important partner of the European Union. We want to further strengthen our cooperation and the “Eastern Partnership” program will serve for this. We also focused on the “Nabucco” Project and energy issues. This is the field that both sides can get benefit from.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev also spoke about the successful development of Azerbaijan-EU relationship and added that he attached particular significance to these ties. He provided comprehensive information about economic and political reforms in the country. Touching upon the economic advancement in Azerbaijan, the head of state spoke about the country’s involvement in regional and international projects.

Further, the President of Azerbaijan answered the question on Turkey-Armenia rapprochement.

Answering the question whether cooperation between Azerbaijan and Armenia is possible within the framework of “Eastern Partnership” program, Ilham Aliyev reminded that Armenia occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan’s territories, Nagorno Karabakh and nearby regions were under Armenia’s control and Armenia realized ethnic cleansing in those territories. “We insist on solution to the conflict on the basis of UN Security Council’s resolutions and international legal norms. Armenia’s position is that the peoples in Nagorno Karabakh have right for self-determination. But it doesn’t mean that a right for self-determination should violate territorial integrity of states. Armenians have already exercised their right for self-determination, they have an independent Armenia”.
