The French football federation confirmed that national team player Karim Benzema has been ruled out of FIFA World Cup 2022 due to a thigh injury sustained during practice. According to the team's spokesperson, the 34-year-old striker suffered a lesion of the thigh muscle, which requires a recovery time of three weeks, APA reports citing Teletrader.
"I am extremely sad for Karim who had made this World Cup a major objective. Despite this new blow for the French team, I have full confidence in my group. We will do everything to meet the huge challenge that awaits us," coach Didier Deschamps noted in a statement.
On Tuesday, France will play their opening match in Group D against Australia. The World Cup is set to begin on November 20, with the first match of the tournament, between the host, Qatar, and Ecuador, taking place after the opening ceremony.
