US January budget surplus at $118.7 billion

The United States' budget surplus came in at $118.7 billion in January, beating market expectations significantly, the country's Bureau of Fiscal Service stated in its Monthly Treasury Statement published on Thursday. It is the first time the nation has recorded a monthly budget surplus since September 2019, APA-Economics reports citing Tele Trader.

Total receipts in the country stood at $465 billion, with most of them coming from individual income taxes with $289 billion. Those were followed by social insurance and retirement with $134 billion, and corporation income taxes with $14 billion.

Total outlays were $346 billion, with $102 billion of those coming from social security, $74 billion from health, and $54 billion from medicare.
