The 19-year-old national team athlete won the title at the world championship held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The graduate of the Aghjabadi boxing school, who had become the U-23 European champion at the end of November, faced Edmond Khudoyan (Russia) in the final. Mamedov defeated his opponent 4:3 (30:27, 28:29, 29:28, 30:27, 28:29; judges’ score 1:1) to claim the gold medal at the world championship. With this victory, he went down in history as Azerbaijan’s youngest world champion.
As a result, Azerbaijan’s national team completed the world championship, which featured athletes from 120 countries, with one gold and two bronze medals. Earlier, Alfonso Domingues (92 kg) and Mahammad Abdullayev (+92 kg) finished in third place at the tournament.
