US blue-chip stocks rose on Tuesday with the Dow hitting another record high close - its 25th since the start of October.
The Dow Jones industrial average was up 26.51 points, or 0.21%, at 12,582.59. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index was up 1.17 points, or 0.08%, at 1,431.90. But the Nasdaq Composite Index was down 5.04 points, or 0.20%, at 2,497.78.
Trading was moderate on the New York Stock Exchange, with about 1.51 billion shares changing hands. About 2.20 billion shares were traded on the Nasdaq.
US crude for February delivery fell $US1.78 to settle at $US51.21 per barrel, after hitting a session low at $US50.55 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Energy stocks amounted to a fifth of overall market losses as oil plunged 3% to hit its lowest level since May, 2005. /APA/
