Baku-APA. Turkey's foreign ministry summoned the German ambassador on Friday after Berlin sent for the envoy from Ankara over a Turkish official's remarks directed at the German chancellor, APA reports quoting Turkish Anadolu Agency.
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu who is now in Ukrainian confirmed that the German ambassador in Ankara was summoned on Friday, according to the report.
He said Turkey felt uncomfortable about certain statements from Germany and summoned the diplomat after Turkey's envoy in Berlin was sent for.
The escalating diplomatic tension was triggered by German Chancellor Angela Merkel's criticism of Ankara's crackdown on anti- government protesters.
Merkel said she was "appalled" to see the Turkish security forces' "overly harsh" crackdown on protesters and blocked the next step in the EU's membership talks with Turkey.
In response, Turkey's EU Affairs Minister Egemen Bagis said Thursday that Merkel's criticism was an attempt to look for political material for Germany's upcoming elections.
His remarks caused discontent from German foreign ministry which summoned the Turkish ambassador in Berlin.
