The referendum held in the Kurdish autonomy in northern Iraq is dragging the region and the whole world into fire, Turkish Defense Minister Nurettin Canikli told reporters in Baku, APA reported.
The defense minister said the ethnic and religious balance in the Middle East must not be disturbed.
"No state’s prognosis about this region has come to happen so far. The Middle East has its own realities. Turkey shares 350km-long border with Iraq and thus can not remain indifferent to what's happening therein,” he said.
Canikli stressed that PKK’s threats against Turkey have increased since the referendum in northern Iraq.
"That’s what we’re observing in the region. Turkey can not ignore it. All options are on the table in order to eliminate any threat to Turkey,” he warned.
Canikli also added that Turkmens began to be displaced from Kirkuk and other areas and replaced by another ethnic group in 2003.
"Today some effort is being made to annex Kirkuk to that region, which is unacceptable,” he said.
