Baku-APA. Slovakian President Ivan Gasparovic on Friday said it was unacceptable to have citizens killed when trying to resolve political disputes, referring to the escalating violence in Ukraine, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

In a statement in regard to the rising tensions in Slovakia's eastern neighbor, the president said his country "could not stay indifferent to violence in Ukraine."

Gasparovic added Ukraine was a major partner to the Slovak Republic.

Slovakia nervously watches the escalating tensions on its border, as the Ukraine natural gas pipeline is a vital source for Slovakia. Just like Ukraine, Slovakia uses natural gases from Russia and earns money for its transit further west.

Clashes and political tensions have the potential of crippling supplies and leaving Europe without natural gas as it happened in 2009. At the time, Slovakia was without natural gas for nearly two weeks.

Ukraine has been in a political crisis since the end of November 2013, when it stopped its preparation process for European Union integration in favor of closer ties with its neighbor Russia.

Three citizens have been reportedly killed and many injured in protests that followed.
