Baku-APA. British police have arrested four people at far-right fascist group English Defence League (EDL) protest in Birmingham, APA reports quoting Press TV.

Police made all the arrests over public order offences after cans, broken glass, and other missiles were thrown at officers during EDL protest in Centenary Square, Birmingham.

Clashes with police began minutes after EDL leader Tommy Robinson delivered his speech in Centenary Square on Saturday afternoon.

Members of United Against Fascism (UAF) also protested in nearby Chamberlain Square next to Birmingham Council House for a counter demonstration.

According to reports, police wore full riot gear as the two sides began advancing towards each other. A police officer was reportedly taken to hospital for receiving a head injury.

Former Birmingham City Council Housing Officer Desmond Jaddoo said, “We are concerned for the safety of these youngsters who could be subject to racial abuse and indeed possible attacks, as the EDL protests do cause concern with regard to public disorder.”

More than 1,000 officers, including many from outside the West Midlands, were on duty in Birmingham today as hundreds of EDL and UAF supporters descend on the city.
