The nine policemen, who carried our military espionage and İzmir port corruption raids, were freed after their lawyers objected to the 10th İzmir High Criminal Court.
The İzmir leg of the wiretapping investigation was kicked off on Aug. 19, when 32 policemen were detained. 11 of them were jailed while 21 of them were released pending trial.
The 9th İzmir High Criminal Court recently admitted the indictment against the policemen prepared by İzmir Public Prosecutor's Office Okan Bato. The policemen were accused of establishing a criminal gang, being a member of a criminal gang, misconduct and slander. Their trial date was set for Nov. 3.
In the past, the 9th İzmir High Criminal Court decided to uphold its earlier decision to keep the 11 policemen jailed. The higher court, however, decided to release at least nine of them on Friday.
Requests for release of Former Batman Police Chief Hasan Ali Okan and Mustafa Edip Çakmak are yet to reach the court, which will then decide on their demand for release.
