Baku-APA. The European Union (EU) announced 61 million euros (75 million U.S. dollars) as fresh support in response to the Ebola crisis in affected countries in West Africa, the European Commission said in a press release on Monday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Neven Mimica, EU Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, announced the aid during his visit to Guinea from Friday to Sunday.

Of the 61 million euros, 11 million and 14 million will go to Guinea and Liberia respectively to help cushion the economic effects of the outbreak, and 20 million euros will be used to redirect a health project launched in late 2013 in Guinea to address the Ebola crisis.

Moreover, 11 million euros are allocated as Ebola preparedness support fund in some African countries. The rest will be used to prevent violence as well as reduce and mitigate tensions that may arise from the outbreak in border areas of the affected countries.

"Our new pledge will help the countries affected by Ebola to better deal with the multiple challenges that arise from this crisis," said Mimica, adding that "we need to make sure that the countries can quickly recover from this crisis and get back on a path of sustainable development."
