Baku-APA. Cemil Cicek, the candidate nominated by Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), was reelected as parliament speaker on Tuesday, APA reports quoting XInhua.
In competition with Osman Koruturk from the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and Faruk Bal from the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), Cicek won 299 votes, while Koruturk gained 109 votes and Bal only 47 in the third round on Tuesday.
"A new constitution is our promise to our nation. This responsibility continues to stand on our shoulders," Cicek told members of the parliament following the election.
On Friday, the AKP presented Cicek as their candidate, while the CHP presented Koruturk from Istanbul, and the MHP put forward Bal from Konya on Monday.
According to the Turkish Constitution, a candidate needs two thirds of the votes (367 votes) to become the parliament speaker. If no one has 367 votes in the first two rounds, then whoever wins at least 276 votes in the third session will be the new speaker.
