He made the remarks at the international conference “NATO 2016 Warsaw Summit – opportunities and expectations” co-organized by the Romanian embassy in Azerbaijan and the Institute for Human Rights of the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences in Baku March 7.

The 2014 NATO summit held in Wales was one of the main summits that took place after the ‘cold war’, according to the ambassador.

“We took crucial steps in fulfilling the Wales obligations in 2015. And we have to reprove the Alliance’s unity during the upcoming Warsaw summit,” he added.

The refugee crisis in the modern world, terrorist attacks happening in countries like Tunisia, Turkey, and France as well as the ongoing tension in Ukraine signal growing security challenges, the diplomat said.

Known for its opposition to the West with regard to some issues, Russia has lately turned more authoritarian and more nationalist, he noted.

The ambassador said that the main threat as a non-state actor in the present time is the “Islamic State” terrorist group with what it is doing in the Middle East and North Africa and that the threat is growing to include larger areas.
