Baku-APA. At least six people were killed in a serious road accident when a bin lorry crashed into pedestrians on Monday at the city center in Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, local media reported, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The accident occurred at 2:30 p.m. local time (1430 GMT) and the site in George Square were cordoned off after the crash.

The police said the "very serious" accident left a number of casualties, said the Sky TV report.

"We don't believe there is anything sinister about the crash," said the police. The driver had also been taken to hospital for injury treatment.

The Scottish ambulance said the bin lorry crashed into a group of pedestrians outside a hotel at George Square.

The bin lorry moved at speed up Queen Street before crashing into the Millennium Hotel. Casualties were seen lying on the road, said eyewitnesses.

The hotel was later evacuated, said the Sky TV report.

British Prime Minister David Cameron and Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon both tweeted, expressing sympathies with everyone involved in the "major incident" at the city center in Glasgow, and commending those offering emergency services.
