The pitched battle involving around 200 people took place at around 9am in the morning ahead of the match between Atletico and Deportivo and led to the death of 43 year-old Deportivo fan, Javier Romero Taboada.

Taboarda was beaten before being thrown into the River Manzanares, which runs close to Atletico's Vicente Calderon Stadium. Herremained in the water for around 20 minutes and suffered hypothermia before going into cardiac arrest.

Two of those arrested on Tuesday in police raids, which took place simultaneously in Madrid and the nearby cities of Avila and Toledo, are thought to have been directly involved in provoking Taboada's death.

The match had been classified as 'low risk' of violence by authorities, despite information sent from La Coruna that around 100 Riazor Blues were planning to Madrid.

Images of the fight captured on close circuit cameras in the street where it took place and also numerous video recordings by neighbors, who filmed events on their mobile phones, have been used by police to identify those involved.

The Spanish police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that it will continue until all of those involved have been detained.

Last week saw Atletico Madrid ban any supporters either carrying a 'Frente' banner or wearing a Frente scarf from entering the Vicente Calderon, while anyone involved in the fight will be banned by the club.
