A criminal case of “insult” filed against former Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu over statements he made to prosecutors has been dismissed before the trial began, APA reports, citing Habertürk.
The case was closed after the damage was compensated through İmamoğlu’s lawyers.
According to the accusation, İmamoğlu was to be tried under the charge of “publicly insulting an official due to their duty,” facing up to 4 years and 1 month in prison and a political ban, for remarks he made to prosecutors during his court testimony on March 23. He was scheduled to appear before the judge on October 22.
However, the court ruling noted that under Article 75 of the Turkish Criminal Code, the accusation against İmamoğlu falls under the procedure where the penalty can be settled by paying a specified amount before the case goes to trial. Since İmamoghlu paid the designated amount on time, the court dismissed the case.
The ruling also stated that both parties have the right to appeal to the Istanbul Court of Appeal within two weeks.
