Georgia's Constitutional Court has begun considering a lawsuit filed by the ruling Georgian Dream party seeking the dissolution of opposition parties, APA's local bureau reports.
By a decision issued today, the court referred the case to the plenum for consideration.
The lawsuit seeks to have the United National Movement, founded by former President Mikheil Saakashvili, the Coalition for Change, Lelo – Strong Georgia, the Federalists, and former Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia's For Georgia party declared unconstitutional.
It should be noted that the initial lawsuit, signed by 88 members of the Georgian parliament, was submitted to the Constitutional Court in October last year. Georgian Dream updated the lawsuit last month by adding the For Georgia party. The party accuses the political groups named in the lawsuit of refusing to recognize the legitimacy of the 2024 parliamentary elections, engaging in activities aimed at forcibly changing the political system, and calling for sanctions against Georgia.
