Jean-Noel Barrot, the French Minister of Foreign Affairs said that on Wednesday, EU diplomats announced sanctions on nearly 200 tankers from Russia's "shadow fleet", APA reports citing Reuters.
Sources who spoke anonymously said that although two countries need to consult with their parliaments about the details, the package will be adopted by the foreign ministers of the bloc next week.
The latest sanctions package comes at a time when Moscow and Kyiv are close to their first peace talks after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The package also includes new restrictions on 30 companies that trade in dual-use products, while 75 individuals and entities are listed because of their ties to Russia's Military Industrial Complex.
They also agreed to broaden the legal basis for sanctions against hybrid Russian threats. The EU will be able to sanction ships that destroy cables or other assets under the sea. This list has been updated with 20 additional entities and individuals.
In a framework of human rights, the countries agreed to impose sanctions on the judges and prosecutors who were involved in the cases of Vladimir Kara-Murza, as well as Alexei Navalny. Both men died in a penal colony located in the Arctic in February, last year.
Sources said that the countries also agreed to a ban on export of chemicals used in missile manufacturing.
