High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell told Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Sunday that the bloc's Global Gateway project is not in opposition to Beijing's Belt and Road Initiative and that the two plans are "complementary," APA reports citing Teletrader.
He also told his Chinese counterpart in a phone conversation that he looks forward to visiting the People's Republic "as soon as possible" and expressed condolences over the recent floods in the Asian country, according to the Chinese foreign ministry. Meanwhile, Wang said that bilateral relations "maintain a good momentum" and that Beijing welcomes Borrell's visit later this year.
Both senior diplomats underlined the importance of efforts to prepare for the next EU-China Leaders' meeting and also discussed Niger, Ukraine and issues of common concern.
