The number of nuclear power reactors around the globe is estimated to increase by 60 per cent by 2030, but the industry still needs to deal with a series of challenges, said Yuri Sokolov, the Deputy Director General of the United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency, addressing an event in Seoul to mark 30 years of civilian nuclear power in the South Korea, APA reports. He said decades of experience in constructing, commissioning, operating and maintaining nuclear power plants would be a crucial help to bring newcomers into the nuclear field. There are 440 nuclear power stations around the world, including 103 in USA, 59 in France, 55 in Japan and 31 in Russia according to IAEA to official. 30 reactors are constructed currently in the developing countries. Nuclear power stations produce 16 percent of energy in the world now. This figure is 78 % in France and 2 % in Japan. Sokolov said regarding the increased energy challenge, Asian countries are seeking alternative energy sources and therefore they desire to construct more nuclear reactors. He said that the countries should choose secure way and guarantee safety of nuclear exploitation and nuclear materials.
