Under Polish law, the granting of citizenship or its refusal is in the competence of the president. His decision is final and cannot be appealed. Anticipating any further developments in the case Poland’s foreign affairs minister Radoslaw Sikorski called the potential request preposterous. Agca asked at first the Polish Consulate in Ankara and his lawyers said that the appropriate documents would be delivered to the Poland’s Interior Ministry and other corresponding organizations in Warsaw.
First information about the Agca’s intentions was spread in early May. At that time his documents were returned back because were drafted not correctly. Presently, Ali Agca is again in jail. He is in Turkey serving time for killing a journalist in 1971. His sentence ends in 2010. The terrorist intends to serve the rest of sentence in Polish jail.
Mehmet Ali Agca attempted a Poe John Paul’s life on May 13, 1981 and wounded him seriously. Later it was clarified that Agca killed Turkish journalist Abdi Ipekchi in 1979.
The Pope visited Agca in jail and asked Italian president to pardon him. Agca spent 19 years in the Italian prison and then was extradited to Turkey.
