Baku-APA. An investigation is underway regarding an explosion in the Romanian capital, Bucharest, which started a fire at a hospital and killed four newborn babies and severely injured seven others, APA reports quoting Press TV.

Officials are claiming an electric fault in the air conditioning system. Only a few days old, the surviving babies are said to be in critical condition suffering from 70 to 80 percent burns.

Health Minister Attila Cseke described Monday’s fire as "one of the darkest tragedies in the history of the Romanian healthcare system," reported BBC.

Romania is one of the poorest countries in the European Union and its medical services are considered among the worst. Safety and hygiene standards are said to have changed very little since the communist era in Romania.
