The Caspian is a closed water body and the methods used in oil and gas operations in the open seas and oceans do not always correspond to it (the Caspian Sea - ed.), Konul Ahmadsoy, an advisor to the State Ecological Expertise Agency under the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, said this at the "IADC Drilling Caspian 2025" drilling conference held in Baku, APA-Economics reports.
"We are particularly cautious in the operations carried out in our country (oil and gas operations - ed.). Sometimes operators refer to the standards or technologies used in the North Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, or the Persian Gulf. However, the situation with the Caspian Sea is different. It is a closed water body and the methods used in the oil and gas sector in the open seas and oceans do not always correspond to it (the Caspian Sea - ed.)", - Konul Ahmadsoy noted.
According to her, the Caspian Sea has a unique endemic biodiversity: "Being a closed water body, it has a limited ability to regenerate itself compared to other water bodies. In addition, many years of active oil and gas production have caused significant damage to the Caspian Sea. This is because mining began here long before people began to think about protecting the environment and understand the danger of these processes. Therefore, we are in favor of discussions specifically dedicated to the Caspian region. We consider it important to apply the best international practices and the strictest environmental standards here so that projects in the Caspian become an example for the whole world."
