He congratulated the people of Azerbaijan on the peaceful election: “We are here not to teach you a lesson, we have come to observe the elections. What we have observed, the elections were held in a peaceful atmosphere. We have not seen any fact of pressure on voters.”

However, he noted that further progress is needed regarding fundamental freedoms. He urged the Azerbaijani authorities to pay attention to the recommendations.

PACE and the European Parliament will present a final report in the coming weeks.

Head of the PACE observation mission Robert Walter said that 7-member PACE delegation arrived in Azerbaijan a month ago. Noting that the long-term mission observed the pre-election situation, Walter said that they conducted monitoring with the delegation of 30 MPs on the election day.

He stressed that PACE is following the ongoing processes in Azerbaijan.

Walter noted that Ilham Aliyev has won the majority of votes: “We have participated in the process of counting votes and have not faced irregularities.”

He said that it is a political matter whether unsuccessful candidates will recognize the results of the elections or not, and they should be asked such questions: “I know that a number of people in Azerbaijan criticize PACE’s activity. But politicians from the entire Europe are represented in PACE and they make reports and decisions conducting free discussions.”
