Azerbaijani President takes investigation of journalistâ€™s death under personal supervision

He said that Azerbaijani President regarded this fact as a threat to freedom of speech and information, independent activities of mass media outlets in the country and noted that ensuring media freedom which is an essential ingredient of democratic principles is one of the priority tasks of the Azerbaijani state. “Violation of this principle is unacceptable and completely contrary to the interests of the state and nature of the state’s policy.”

Hasanov said that having heard about the incident, President Ilham Aliyev instructed Prosecutor General's Office and Interior Ministry of the Republic of Azerbaijan to thoroughly investigate the case as soon as possible, find and bring the perpetrators to justice and regularly inform the head of state and the public about the causes of the incident and progress of the investigation.

“Azerbaijani President took the investigation under his personal supervision and noted that the perpetrators will be punished in accordance with law. Mr. President said that necessary measures will be further continued under his personal control to ensure fundamental human rights and freedoms, including freedom of speech and information, independence of media and especially safety of journalists in Azerbaijan,” Hasanov said.
