Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy has said an oil tanker caught fire after striking a sea mine south of the Strait of Hormuz, APA reports, citing Iran’s Fars news agency.
According to the Iranian account, the tanker was travelling along an unauthorised route with its navigation and radar systems switched off. The collision with the mine reportedly triggered the fire.
Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported that the vessel was carrying more than two million barrels of crude oil.
No official information has been released about possible casualties, the vessel’s ownership or the extent of any environmental damage.
