Speaker of Azerbaijan's Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova met on October 28 with a delegation led by Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, who is on a visit to Azerbaijan, the Milli Majlis Department of Press and Public Relations told APA.
Congratulating the guest on his election as OIC Secretary-General, Speaker Sahiba Gafarova wished him success in his future activities.
She stated that Azerbaijan being one of the first countries the guest has visited in his new position demonstrates the strong ties between the country and the OIC. The Speaker of the Milli Majlis expressed confidence that the visit would contribute to strengthening mutual cooperation.
The Speaker emphasized the significance of the discussions held during the guest's meeting with President Ilham Aliyev, as well as his participation in the 7th World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue held in Baku and the Third High-Level Meeting of the Heads of Anti-Corruption Agencies of OIC Member States.
During the conversation, Azerbaijan's important role in the activities of the OIC was noted. At the same time, it was emphasized that the OIC's continued support for Azerbaijan both during the occupation of Azerbaijani territories and in the post-conflict period, as well as the numerous resolutions and decisions adopted by the organization, reflected this support and solidarity.
During the meeting, the Speaker also spoke about the significance of the 20th session of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC), which she currently chairs, held in Baku in June this year, and the issues discussed there. The Speaker of the Milli Majlis shared her views on the prospects for cooperation between the PUIC and the OIC.
The Secretary-General shared his impressions of his meeting with President Ilham Aliyev, the President's speech at the Forum, as well as the development he had witnessed in Azerbaijan. He stated that Azerbaijan sets an example for the entire world on how to preserve peace and stability.
The Secretary-General emphasized the importance of issues related to Azerbaijan's hosting of the 16th session of the Islamic Summit Conference in 2027 and its chairmanship of the OIC. He expressed confidence that the organization's activities would be further strengthened under Azerbaijan's chairmanship.
Speaking about the importance of parliamentary diplomacy, the guest stated that the OIC has always supported Azerbaijan's territorial integrity and sovereignty. He extended his congratulations on the upcoming Victory Day and highly appreciated the work carried out in Azerbaijan's liberated territories.
The meeting also featured an exchange of views on strengthening Islamic solidarity, promoting intercultural dialogue, further expanding cooperation between Azerbaijan and the OIC, and other topics.
