PACE summer session starts in Strasburg today

A number of human rights defenders and opposition representatives also left for Strasburg together with the parliamentarians to attend the events to be held within the framework of PACE session. The parliamentarians will hear the reports of missions observed the elections in Georgia and Macedonia on June 23, then Swedish foreign minister Carl Bildt will address PACE on behalf of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers and then PACE will discuss the prevention of environmental pollution of the Black Sea. Discussions on the activity of democratic institutions in Azerbaijan will be held on June 24 and on the situation of democratic institutions in Turkey on June 26. The issue of democratic institutions in Armenia was also included in the session’s agenda as an extraordinary question. Chairman of the Monitoring Committee Sergei Golovatiy stated that it was considered expedient to hold extraordinary hearings on this issue because PACE resolution on the post-election events in Armenia was not fulfilled completely.
