Azerbaijani parliament adopts draft law empowering Constitutional Court to postpone elections

Giving information about the draft law, chairman of the parliament’s committee for legal policy and statehood Ali Huseynov underlined that amendments to the Constitution were made in the referendum.
“The Constitution envisages extension of the term of the parliament and president during active military operations. Today’s draft law reflects that the related decision was adopted by the Constitutional Court,†he said.
Ali Huseynov said two new articles annexed to the law empower the Constitutional Court to extend the term of the parliament and president during war. According to another article, if the Central Election Commission considers it impossible to hold parliamentary and presidential elections during active military operations, it appeals to the Constitutional Court to extend the term of the parliament and president till the end of the military operations. The Constitutional Court is to begin considering the appeal within seven days and pass a decision to extend or not the term of the parliament and president. The decision is to be passed with the vote of at least six judges at the plenum of the Constitutional Court, sent to the parliament and the CEC.
102 voted for, 2 against the annexes.
